Where's Honey...Day 4 continued

We spent a lot of time in this big building.  You could put the whole of Fry Pan Gulch in it.  More people, too.  I’m getting a mite homesick for dirt roads and buildings small enough you can throw a rock over them.  Speaking of which, I met up with an ugly rock feller called Easter.  Shy, though—not too talkative.

Then Diane took me to see what she called a knight.  I read about them in a book.  They ride around dressed in steel jackets, skirts, and hats, and poke at each other with long sticks.  Don’t make much sense to me.  They all ought to visit Fry Pan Gulch, for I’d be glad to show them around.  They can leave their
sticks home, though.  We have plenty.

Where's Honey...Day 4

We went and seen lots of stuff today...

I thought they was outhouses but turns out they have these here talking machines called telephones in them.  Diane's feller tried to lock me in but I got him later when we went to this big building with lots of stuff in it.  That included a horse made out of rock, only they forgot the legs and ears.

At least the horse has a head--that's more than I can say for some of those stone people.  Maybe it's why they couldn't read that there rock.

Where's Honey...Day 3

Can you guess today's sights?

Diane put me on one if these here buses.  I wasn’t too keen on the notion, what with the smell and all.  Besides, they go faster than even Pickles, my black racing mule.  It was a sunny day, at least for this neck of the woods—we get a lot more sun back home—so off we went to see some cliffs.  Now why in tarnation she had to take me halfway around the world to see some cliffs is beyond me.  But there they are.  I admit, they are kind of pretty, white as they are and all.

Let me tell you, Leeds Castle is quite a place.  You could put the Tasty Chicken Emporium in it a dozen times over.  If Mama had this place, she’d make a mint.  And take a look at this wine barrel.  Now, if it was filled with fine Kentucky Bourbon, it would make some old cowhands mighty happy.  Diane didn’t even let me have a snort—or kick up a game of poker in the parlor.  Then again, you could play base-ball in that there parlor.  Several of them.

#WheresHoney, continued...

Where's Honey, continued...

I won’t say I’m bothersome, but my scribe told me I needed a vacation so she could finish the next book in the Honey Beaulieu series, SIDETRACKED IN SILVER CITY.  Well, my buddy Diane took me with her, and let me tell you, did we travel (I’ll tell you about that big scary bird someday).  We’re in a town with more people than I ever did see.  This here’s a big house, but only a few people live in it.  I’m guessing it’s a least a three-holer.  Maybe more, on account of they have to hire guards so that people don’t come in.  I don’t know why else folks would want to go in that place.  Hell, you could get lost in there.  Anyway, I reckoned I’d help the guard, but he didn’t seem much obliged.  Just stood there.  I was tempted to poke him to see if he’d tip over.  Then again, he just might be tougher than a cast iron buffalo... you never know about these things.

We ate good, I’ll give you that.  But I don’t know how they’re gonna grow any food what with the ground all covered over with rocks—the  tomaters would get tromped on anyway.  They got a tall water trough, too, but nary a soul watered their horses in it.  Diane told me I couldn’t drink the water and took me over to a coffee shop.  I’ll send pictures of us there another day.  Lots to see here what with the stone men and lions—I wonder if Diane’s gonna take me to the zoo so I can see some real ones.

I was a mite worried that Diane would get lost so I bought us this here map.  I can’t make heads nor tails of it but she’s happy and bought me another one of them fancy tea drinks.  When we get home, I’ll buy her a good stiff shot of tequila.  She’ll need it.

WHERE'S HONEY CONTEST!

Well, dang, no one told me that starring in my own series would get me an invite to... hehehe... I ain’t gonna tell you, but the big dogs issued me this here passport.
Where do you think I’m off to?

The Birth of Honey Beaulieu

I couldn't be happier that Honey Beaulieu's story will finally be told. She's been waiting in
the wings for over eighteen years—and not all that patiently, I might add.

Her wait is the story of my writing career, almost. I began writing in 1996 when I dreamed a
story. That manuscript wasn't completed until two years later. About three chapters from the
end, characters and situations for other books began swirling in my head, which sure didn't help
to get that first one finished.

One of my critique partners told me to type them up and put them in an Ideas folder, then finish
the book, which I did. I think of that folder as my own private treasure chest. Many of those
ideas developed into books--all the Hearts of Owyhee books came from that, as did Sleight of Heart.

But one of the ideas--my favorite--I knew I'd never write because the large publishers (the only
option then) would never in a million years buy a non-traditional Western with a female
protagonist that didn't have enough romance to be a Romance, didn't have enough paranormal to
be a Paranormal, or enough mystery to be a Mystery, and at that time, there weren't any female
action/adventure protagonists.

So this idea stayed in my treasure chest, but every once in a while Honey pounded on the door.
I never forgot her, but writing a book takes a very long time and a lot of commitment of
resources, so writing an unmarketable book wasn't in the cards.

Then, last year, my critique partner and I were discussing where I should go with my next
series. For some reason, Honey banged on the lid of the treasure chest again. Only I have to
admit, her name was originally Pansy. She always did hate her name, which is why I changed it
in the first reference to her in Much Ado About Marshals, and she hasn't complained since.

So for the first time since 1998, I opened the file and sent it to my friend. She loved Honey
right off the bat, almost as much as I did. She pointed out that we don't have to write to
someone else's specifications--I can write anything I want! Furthermore, she convinced me that
my readers would love it.

I was excited so didn't tell her my misgivings--at least, not many of them. But I worried that
my readers wouldn't go for the grittiness or the more bawdy tone. Even so, once I got all the
books that I'd committed to writing off my plate, Honey took stage, front and center. She's
not wanting to move off, either.

In my initial concept back in 1998, Honey and her two sisters were all pistoleers. Over time,
she brought me around to her way of thinking--this series was hers and no one else's. Her
sisters' personalities haven't changed but they aren't pistoleers, and the series is definitely
all Honey's.

So please enjoy the ride along with Honey Beaulieu. She's quite a gal.  She even has her own blog!

Keep up with Jacquie Rogers' latest news at the
Pickle Barrel Gazette!
